Benefits of Trenchless Constructability & Design Among Different Delivery Methods – Part II

When it comes to Job Order Contracting (JOC), leveraging a trenchless constructability and design (TCD) consultant may be one of your best approaches to getting the job done correctly and on-time. Regardless of the delivery method, it is essential to note that early involvement is key.     

In this next installment covering the benefits of taking such a route for a multitude of project delivery types, we will examine the specific advantages for a JOC scenario. Job Order Contracting (JOC)  

In the commercial construction world, the Job Order Contracting project delivery type describes the situation in which a contract is set for a fixed amount of time and budget, selected based on a contractor’s competitive bid to perform job orders throughout the contract. 

 

How the Services Fit 

JOC work in the underground utility space is often in response to a leaking or broken line, so time is typically a critical factor. So, the integration of TCD services within these projects encompasses problem-solving, cost-estimating, and pros and cons for evaluations within a timely manner. In comparison with a CMAR project, it can be referred to as a “mini-CMAR,” as it will typically move quicker with more of a compressed time schedule.  

The Conceptual Design service offers potential methods for how the JOC order can best be carried out, while Construction Consulting can help provide an accurate expected duration of traffic impacts to the surrounding area. Perhaps maybe the most important way a TCD service can provide benefits to a JOC project is through its Design Consulting as it assists in determining the best method, best location for bore pits (also Bore Pit Support and Design), what existing utilities need to be considered, and traffic control to minimize the impact to the public. Moreover, Claims Avoidance is another main focus and is strategized to determine the safest way to construct and best end product in the case of emergency repair JOC projects.  

It is critical to note that JOC projects have the potential to often exert more impact to the public, so partnering with a TCD consultant will help minimize the impact by ensuring utilities are back up and running as soon as possible since time is the primary consideration.
