Understanding what lies beneath the surface is crucial for any construction project. SSC’s Subsurface Utility Engineering (S.U.E.) services use advanced technology to detect underground utilities with accuracy, helping to reduce delays, prevent conflicts, and improve safety. From data analysis to precise utility mapping, these services provide essential insights to keep projects moving smoothly.

The Pilot Tube Method (Guided Boring Method) is a hybrid trenchless technique designed for precise casing installation on line and grade. This innovative approach is perfect for installing utilities under roadways, railroads, canals, and other structures where open cutting isn’t an option.
How it works: Pilot tubes are steered using a theodolite guidance system for accuracy, and then a cutting head and auger follow the pilot path, installing the casing while ensuring precision. This method combines accuracy and efficiency, making it a trusted solution for challenging projects.

Service Spotlight! Sometimes, simple is best—even in trenchless technology. At SSC Underground, we know that hand tunneling (or hand mining) is still the safest and most effective solution for certain projects, especially where open-cutting or mechanical tunneling isn’t feasible.
This method allows precise installation of utilities under roadways, railroads, and more, even in challenging soil conditions or tight spaces. With a minimum diameter of 42” for safety and unmatched line and grade control, hand tunneling ensures success in even the most complex environments.

Vacuum Excavating and Utility Potholing Service Spotlight! The SSC vacuum excavation service provides a non-destructive method for safely and efficiently locating, exposing existing underground utilities, or preparing to install new ones. Once a hole is cut in the surface, pressurized air is used to break up the soil while a high-pressure vacuum unit is then used to remove any impeding debris depositing it into the storage tank. This underground utility location method has become the industry standard for digging very precise utility potholes with virtually no risk of damaging any existing utilities.

Today`s Service Spotlight focuses on skidding! In projects that have used open excavation or trenching to place casing, skidding is used to pull or push the utility carrier lines into place using a jack and bore machine. Carrier lines are assembled and casing spacers are attached before installation.
Some projects may require the final welding of casing sections before utilities are installed. These kinds of jack and bore jobs are efficient and cost-effective when skidding is needed for the underground construction of utility line placement.

Water conservation is always a hot topic in AZ, and at this RV park at Picacho Peak with PCL Construction, the rate of water loss was approx. 4 gallons per minute, equating to nearly 6,000 gallons per day!
SSC was contracted for our hydrovac services to locate the source of the significant water leak from an underground pipe. Leveraging our expertise and technology, the leak was able to be located and exposed, allowing crews to repair the pipe and stop the significant loss of water.

Curious about the process of Pilot Tube Boring under a road?
Pilot Tube Auger Boring uses a two-phase process to complete the casing installation. First, a steering head followed by pilot tubes are pushed into the ground, steered using a theodolite guidance system that allows installation on precise line and grade.
Following this pilot bore, a special cutting head followed by auger is hooked to the pilot tube using an adapter and the casing is installed using traditional auger boring, following the path of the pilot tube. As the casing and auger advance, the pilot tube is pushed out into the reception pit where it is broken down and removed.
